SKELEFLEX
http://www.skeleflex.com/

My wallet officially hates Cornboy for telling me about these critters.

They're a lot like Xevoz, and perhaps a cousin to Bionicle. Same basic deal. You buy the canister and get about 30-50 pieces to build either a dinosaur or an alien skeleton. Can't go wrong with that formula. At between $10 and $15 per set (there are standard and deluxe sizes), the price is actually a little more affordable than recent Bionicle sets.

Since these guys are SO similar to Xevoz, and maybe even MagnaBones, I almost feel like the manufacturer could get sued over it. That is, if it weren't for the *flexible joint* gimmick. It's more like an afterthought, really. Each set comes with a little pouch which contains anywhere from 2 to 4 flexi-joints that can be added at any connection point on the figure. These pieces don't really serve much of a purpose, but you can have some fun with them.

The larger sets like Spinosaurus and OctoAttack have built-in action features. Spinosaurus's skull and jaw are connected permanently, but you can open the mouth and let it snap shut. OctoAttack has a somewhat interesting "headbutt" type feature that relies on a rather large piece of flexible plastic, making that particular toy most true to the name "Skeleflex."

All Skeleflex pieces are interchangeable, so with each set you buy, you can build larger and larger beasts. So far I've only managed to create long, leviathon-type creatures, but I'm working on a few ideas for upright monsters. I'll post more photos later.

For now, I recommend these to anyone who likes building they own figures and has already had fun with Xevoz or Bionicle. It's an improvement on an idea, in my opinion, and well worth the price.

TOYSRUS.com has a few items I haven't seen in stores yet, like the giant T-Rex with base, and colored 2-packs of the standard sets. If you're ordering online, avoid the official site and go for the TRU website:

Ha. Always happy to share the misery, Baena.

BTW, I found a good use for the flex-joints. They just happen to be perfectly converters for Time Keeper neck joints :D

Awesome stuff Ed!

I think my daughter would love these actually. I know I would.
She's into cool dinosaur/animal/science type toys. And these would fit that bill for sure!

(See that... It's my trying to convince myself I need to go pick some up TODAY.)

I haven't gotten any yet but I've been eying a couple of the small sets.

Go for it :D

As it turns out, popping those Time Keeper heads on the ball joints wasn't the greatest idea ever. It temporarily stretched out the plastic around the socket, so that when I returned the heads to their owners, one of them was a bit loose and wobbly. After a few hours, though, it seems the plastic has returned to normal and the joint is tight. I had the same issue with the Red Time Keeper + Busou Shinki combo, but it rectified itself after a while.

NOTE: In case I forget to mention it elsewhere, keep your action figures away from Super Sculpey! It will destroy the paint and even eat away at the plastic. I'm serious. I've witnessed it myself.

Back to Skeleflex, I had to keep my hands busy while watching some TV tonight, so I built a beast using *almost* all the Skeleflex parts I own so far. I'm not really planning on buying any more, but it's tempting. If money were no object, I could buy tons of these things and build monstrous creatures with them. Buahahahaha...

Actually, Ed. Now that I've bought a few more sets, I'm not quite as gung-ho about these as I thought I was gonna' be.

I initially bought the Triceratops, the Velociraptor, the Ceratosaurus, and the Plesiosaur (those spellings are probably waaay off...), and I was absolutely IN LOVE with these things! I thought they were going to be that obsession that replaced Xevoz for me.

Over the weekend I picked up the Spinosaurus set and the Skullkor set, and I wasn't nearly as impressed with either of those. The proportions on the Spinosaurus seemed much more cartoony than any of my previous Skeleflex purchases.

I'll probably pick up the rest of the dinosaur sets (except that ridiculously priced Tyrannosaurus set - which I think only leaves the Stegosaurus for now - which does look really good from the images I've seen) just to wrap that collection up, but I'm just not diggin' the alien sets at all.

Skeleflex - A Xevoz replacement? Not quite, but they're still pretty darned good.

-CORNBOY-

EDIT: I actually picked up Skullkor and played around with him a little after I posted this last night. I re-posed him in sort of a "Futuristic Flying Monkey from The Wizard of Oz" pose, and I like him TONS better now. I might still add a tail... I might just like thus little guy even better than my least favorite of the Dinos - Spinosaurus. -CB-

If I may say to you CB, get quadmos (i think), the 4 armed alien, he was the first one I got, and it's incredibly fun.. the range you can get on his arms and his claws just makes him crazy, I've had him in attack poses and some pretty funny neutral poses (nothing is better than a skeletal creature with one pair of arms crossed and another on its hips, looking bored)

I also got the 2 pack of the red velociraptor and the fang-o-flex alien (which I admit, doesn't thrill me, it is a little awkward with the spines on it's back and the HUGE underbite.. I'm tempted by the 2 headed guy, seeing that picture of him, and I want a triceretops, but my tru didn't get the single dinos.. for some reason.

I'm really trying not to overdo these guys.. no room, not enough cash, though there is part of me that hopes they expand this line to cryptozoology, if only so I can get a sasquatch, moth man and chupacabra skeleton.. (technically, the pleiosaur would double for Nessie, so there's that)

Try Wal-Mart for the small single Dinos. I found all four there about a month before any of the others hit Toys R Us.

Cryptozoology skeletons would be AWESOME! I may have to write to the company to make that suggestion!

Looks like it may just be personal preference on these guys. I don't like the design of the Quadmo Alien, but I like Fang-o-flex. In the end, I picked these guys up for the parts. The cryptozoology expansion is a clever idea.

I tried slapping some Xevoz armor on the Skeleflex bones last night, but it didn't work. Oh well. I would've been thrilled if these things were compatible with Xevoz, but I guess it's a combination that just wasn't meant to be. What do you think the chances are of a Xevoz revival? SANS the game pieces and stickers.

I gotta say, these look pretty interesting and as far as Xevoz go, I was nerdy enough to e-mail Hasbro a letter about how much I liked them when I heard they were cancelling them

I'm the best at what I doo
