MOTUC Monogram Roton Rider

I don't know why, but I've always been interested in the mysteriously half-hidden Monogram box art characters. When I saw The Raw's MOTUC vision artwork, I got the impetus to finally make one. Hopefully there will be more of this guys down the road.

Recipe:
Head: MOTUC Faker, DCSH Azreal, Apoxie Sculpt
Cape: Modified DCSH Steel
Body: MOTUC Triklops
Boots: MOTUC Zodak, MOTUC Stratos
Staff: MOTUC Zodak

Eddie is an awesome guy. He used to post on a forum I belong to, but when he got super busy he stopped. BUt I have him on my facebook an myspace. His work is just amazing! He has given me some pointers here an there too.

Excellent customs man! I never noticed the "characters" in those artworks before... especially the Wind Raider guy!

Hey He-Mike, I sent you an email. Did you get it?

sometimes simplicity works best...
you can make create something that takes you you a lifetime but people will like the warm up sketch you did this morning better...

this guy is great he really looks like the roton driver in motuc style...how can you NOT like him

It's just a hobby for me. I've been improving my painting bit by bit, but I think the painting tip of the hap still goes to Baena- he's the real pro. Speaking of which, we're all waiting for him to post all of the cool stuff he keeps mentioning: queen variants, mutant ladies, okapis... In truth I'm a bit bemused at all the fan response on this guy as he wasn't that technically difficult to pull off. He required nowhere near the work that my Jewel Thief took. He went from a base figure with 5pts of articulation to one with about 20! Perhaps I just like architectural customs that incorporate lots of frankengineering like the insane stuff Grown Nerd puts together.

For example, I *FINALLY* picked up a Cog Soldier from GoW, and he is every bit as awesome as Pax and DR and whoever else recommended him said he was!!! (So thanks, fellas!)

But anyway, he's sculpted by Mike Sandbothe.

The only thing the internet tells me is that he collaborated on this Creature from the Black Lagoon model kit:
http://darkcarnivalmodels.com/swimmingcreature.html

Would be cool to see if we could get more info on cats like that.
I'm *all about* sculptors and the like getting as much credit for their work as possible.

Anyway he-mike, sorry for the minor threadjack there.

You know, we should start a thread on these boards, sort of a toy industry creative types "Hall of Fame" thread, listing sculptors, designers, fabricators, prototype painters, package designers, etc.

It would be pretty informative!
In the über-geeky sense, of course!

I love this idea!

He-Mike, have you ever thought about getting into prototype painting?

If you haven't seen Eddie Wires website, check it out;

Super nice dude, I've talked to him a few times at SDCC. Him and his brother both do this kind of work and they've worked on some of the coolest toys ever made (check out the prototype Gobo from the cancelled Palisades Fraggle Rock line). With the techniques you have I think you should definatly look into doing this type of thing pro. That is, of course, if you don't already do this professionally.

This is really sweet He-mike.

You could almost use a modified Trap-Jaw belt when he comes out next month. The belt in the picture looks like it comes up higher, almost like that of Trap-Jaws.

One question: do you spray-paint the figures, or do you use a brush?

It's all by hand. Painstakingly by hand. I usually use three very similar tones (medium full cover base, dark tint in grooves and light on ridges) for each color. This gives the sculpt more depth in appearance yet also looks like a uniform single application of color. It's all about subtlety.

Another home run... Really great work man!

I have the Talon Fighter model, I got it with intentions on building it for my 200x collection (but I was a slave to Mickey Mouse back then) and never got around to it. It's a much sleeker, streamlined version on that already awesome design.

Now, thanks to you He-Mike, I think I'm gonna break it out and make the pilot. Like I said before, I got inspired to make these guys earlier this week when I ran across those models on FinalFrontiers site. It kills me because I picked up the Talon Fighter sealed for like $5 on eBay back in like '04. The others were going for about the same. Good luck getting them for that now.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Over at the .org it was asked who the other mysterious characters were, so I'm posting the reply over here too.

There's two other Monogram characters and another mysterious fellow in a wind Raider from the old checklist poster. I've got a few ideas rolling around about them, but nothing concrete yet. There so many other great characters to choose from it's hard to say when, or if I'll get to these guys.

Great pics here:

***Sadly I don't have the actual model to pose him next to. I never even had the toy as a kid. More pragmatically I don't have enough display space for any vehicles I really want. I don't know what I'll do next month when Battle-Cat comes out. I'll probably have to put a few more figures in boxes to make room for him. If rearrange my place I might be able to get squeeze another book shelf in.
